This workshop will teach

Understanding Autism and Social Skills Instruction

This workshop is an introduction to Autism .  In the morning participants will learn the essential features of Autism including the medical and educational definition. Each of the 4 areas of disturbance used to obtain a educational diagnosis of Autism will be discussed at length including sensory integration. The afternoon will show participants how to teach social skills to students with Autism including  play skills, and “Circle of Friends”

Intensive Behavior Intervention

This workshop prepares participants to understand functional assessment as well as evaluation tools to complete an assessment and/or analysis.  It also teaches participants to complete the analysis as part of a functional assessment setting up specific conditions and testing hypotheses. The workshop then teaches over 20 different behavior strategies to use with students who have challenging behaviors focusing on preventative interventions. Strategies include visual supports, behavior mapping, language mapping, differential reinforcement, token economies, conditioned reinforcement and many more. This workshop provides various hands-on activities throughout the day. In addition, various antecedent and consequence strategies are also taught including DRA, DRO, DRL, extinction, response cost procedures, noncontingent escape and exclusionary time out.  Strategies will be discussed to help work with the “hardest of the hardest” kids.

Discrete Trail Teaching for The Classroom

This workshop is designed for staff working with students primarily with autism or other developmental disabilities. It will include specific strategies to teach students with Autism using discrete trial teaching in the classroom.  Terminology, definitions, use of curriculum guides, video demonstration, comparison of methodology and hands-on activities are all included.  Participants will also learn data collection procedures and will write child specific programs.  This workshop includes observation and assessment of participants’ techniques to prepare them for implementation.

Asperger’s Syndrome and the Explosive Child

This workshop will teach participants an understanding of Asperger’s Syndrome, defining characteristics and examples to aid in diagnosis.  Teaching strategies will be discussed as well.  In the afternoon participants will learn how to implement the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach from Dr. Greene’s book, “The Explosive Child”.  This is a must for those working with individuals with Asperger’s who have challenging behaviors.
